Just under construction

A new school will grow in Debre Sina

Thanks to the funds raised in the "Let’s Build a School in Africa " campaign, there will be a new school constructed in the distance of approximately 150 km north-east of the Ethiopia´s capital Addis Abeba. The building is intended to grow in the existing school compound called Abiye, which is the only school for the whole town of Debre Sina with 20,000 inhabitants at the moment.

No wonder that there is a real overpressure of school children. Even though they have two teaching shifts every day, one class is often attended by 70 children. For the quality education, this amount is really high. The teachers can not keep attention of all the pupils and barely deal with them individually.

Because of the lack of time and the space (classrooms) in Abiye, they were forced to shorten the individual classes as well. The morning educational block starts at 8:00 am and lasts until 0:30 pm. In the afternoon, new children come together with fresh teachers and the new block lasts from 0:30 pm to 4:45 pm. In each block, there are 6 classes taking 40 minutes each. But the standard is 7 classes that last 45 minutes. The new school building, we are about to start to built thanks to your contributions, should reduce the block system considerably as well as the amount of children in the classes. The standard in Ethiopia allows maximum of 50 children in the classroom of the first grade and 40 children in the second grade. A new school building should bring this goal markedly closer.

The children in Debre Sina as well as the teachers already look forward to opening the five new classrooms for them. The finishing of the construction and the ceremonial opening is scheduled for the end of June 2012.
