Člověk v tísni (People in Need)

People in Need aims to fulfill four main objectives:

  • To provide relief to people in critical and post-crisis regions of the world effectively/
  • To maintain discussion of the role of the Czech Republic and its citizens in the world.
  • To take an active part in creating a tolerant and open-minded society in which cultural, ethnic, racial and other dissimilarities become a source of enrichment rather than conflict.
  • To mobilize public support of an active, pro-democratic foreign policy of the Czech Republic that is not limited to phrases that lack substance when it comes to preservation of human rights.

People in Need has been operating in Ethiopia since 2003. During that time it has built eleven elementary schools for 2700 children, constructed a 250-meter deep water well with a 12-kilometre long distribution system through which approx. 12,000 people are supplied with water, and has organized teacher’s education programmes. Most projects are financially supported as a part of the official Czech development aid. More about the mission in Ethiopia…

The non-governmental, non-profit civic association of People in Need was established as a humanitarian organization that aims to provide relief in critical regions and support human rights adherence throughout the world. The organization’s beginnings date back to May 1992 when its founders implemented first projects aimed to relieve people in distress while it was still headed by the title Lidové noviny Foundation. In February, 1994 its title was changed to People in Need Foundation at Czech Television, then later in April, 1999 it was registered as a ‘public benefit organization’ (non-profit, non-governmental organization).
